can be 67 characters in length?
(2) What characters are permitted in a
domain name, including capitalization?
(3) I just registered a new domain name -
why does it still show as available when I do a 'whois' lookup?
(4) Do I have to activate my website as soon
as I register my domain name?
ANSWERS:
(1) Are longer domain names useful?
Answer: Yes:
-you can use full company names that didn't fit in the previous 23
character limit
-you can use extra keywords to increase your ranking in the search
engines (separated by dashes)
-you can more easily convey your website purpose to potential
visitors
(2) What characters are permitted in a domain
name, including capitalization?
Answer: Letters of the alphabet, numbers 0 to 9, dash (hyphen) and
the ending suffix, like .com or .net or .org (67 characters TOTAL).
Capitalization is not an issue re registration (case is not considered,
AutoMechanics.com is the same as automechanics.com), this simply depends
on whether or not your hosting server supports it (ours do). Also, 'www'
is NOT part of your domain name - this is a server issue. Many servers
REQUIRE the use of this prefix, ours work with or without (either way).
(3) I just registered a new domain name -
why does it still show as available when I do a 'whois' lookup?
Answer: It takes about 2 to 24 hours for the central registry database
to be updated. During this period, nobody else can take your domain
name.
(4) Do I have to activate my website as soon
as I register my domain name?
Answer: No, you can just reserve the domain until you are ready to
activate the website. If you host your website on our servers, it will
be available for use as soon as your website pages are uploaded (no need
for complicated domain transfer procedures).
