When Microsoft launched its flagship browser in 1995, Internet Explorer took off and became the most used browser almost overnight (Google was just a dream in those days, as was Firefox).

This was largely due to the fact they bundled it for free with each installation of Windows (remember that little anti-trust lawsuit?). Up until that time, Netscape had enjoyed being the de facto browser of choice for most users, but IE changed all that, and around 1998 Netscape collapsed entirely.

For the first time since then, Internet Explorer is actually losing market share. The decline is largely due to the efforts of the folks at the open-source Mozilla Foundation, which was established in 1998 to resurrect the fast-failing Netscape browser platform. Seven years later, well after the complete failure of the Netscape company, Mozilla is finally delivering on its promise with Firefox, the latest rage in browser technology.

Users are dumping Internet Explorer in favor of Firefox for reasons such as ease of use, extendibility, and security. Firefox recently got another boost when Google gave Microsoft a wake-up call by jumping into the fray, and its powerful toolbar now comes bundled with Firefox in a free download.

Security has been one of the biggest issues with IE, and it is a big reason why users have been seeking alternative browsers. IE uses ActiveX controls, dynamic HTML, and other technology to provide automation and programmatic control of the browser, which is fine if you want to do things like integrating an estimating system with your browser, but most users will never use this capability.

Unfortunately, it is those very features that are largely responsible for creating the security problems in the first place. These controls can be misused or targeted, amplifying the threat from malicious code, and the problem is further exacerbated by the overwhelming popularity of its browser. Viral perpetrators, worm propagators and hackers target IE because there are so many computers running it.

Microsoft's has responded with a series of patches, fixes, and advisories and in some instances, has suggested turning off features or setting security levels so high the most desirable features of IE can't be used. Finally in October 2004, Microsoft released Windows XP Service Pack 2, a major update that helped close many of the vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer.

Meanwhile, Firefox hit the net with a host of new features and a much more secure framework. Yes it has extensibility (e.g. I can download a little plug-in extension that constantly updates my Google AdSense reporting in the status bar of the browser), but perhaps the greatest innovation is the tabbed window system. Instead of having to open up multiple instances of the browser (which is clumsy, slow and consumes computer resources), you can just pop into another tabbed window inside the program and browse something else, then switch back and forth easily by just clicking on a tab. It's easy to use and facilitates activities such as multiple parallel searches in a snap.

Google is also using the extendibility to enhance their toolbar functionality. Sundar Pichai, Google product manager, was recently quoted: "The Firefox browser supports a lot of extensions. We're adding to them by launching standalone separate extensions only for Firefox."

Google Suggest is a feature already available in regular Web search that auto-completes search queries and suggests refinements. This function also will take place in the query box within the Firefox toolbar.

Google Send to Phone, only available in the United States, lets users quickly save Web information to mobile phones. "If you find any information on the Web that you want to keep handy, you can SMS it to your mobile phone," Pichai said.
