But google isn't the only game in town, when it comes to internet advertising.
Other programs that reportedly pay higher are Chitika
and ClickBank. Chitika refer to their ads as 'eMiniMalls' and
they are different from Adsense in that they contain graphics and allow
the visitor to search for and compare similar products without leaving
the publisher's page. ClickBank is a very successful turnkey affiliate
'machine' that yields high returns on investment (ROI).
Here's a screen capture of an actual real Chitika
eMiniMall Ad, manually targeted for "search engine
marketing":
In a real ad, you can move your mouse over the tabs and interactively
see more information about the product, as well as a search box that
allows you to look at competitive products, without leaving the page. An excerpt from the Chitika
manifesto describes their system:
"eMiniMalls are the industry's first and only intelligent and interactive product merchandising service. eMiniMalls present Web publishers with a feature rich service that offers online product merchandising, a dynamic recommendation engine and robust comparative shopping information in one solution. They are a way to supplement your existing ad revenue while providing a completely new revenue stream through interactive merchandising."
If you open a web hosting account with us,
we'll provide you with a free highly optimized page for any
target market you want to address. This page has a proven track record
and works well with Google AdSense (see AdSense
sample page) or the Chitika and
ClickBank systems, placing well in the search engines when it gets
indexed.

The Essence of AdWords and AdSense:
If
you look at the screen capture of the Google.com home page (above), you'll see the 'Advertising Programs' link
on the lower left (circled) - this is where it all starts. There
are two distinct sides to the advertising: one for advertisers selling
a product or service (AdWords), and one for website publishers
that make money by displaying the advertising in their web pages (AdSense).
Advertisers
using AdWords design a little ad that will appear on the right hand side
of the search page results in Google, and a list of relevant keywords
for their offerings. The Google engine will only present the advertiser's ad if the provided
keywords are present in the search that a Google visitor performs,
and the advertiser pays only for that ad if the searcher clicks on the
ad and visits the advertiser's site (CPC or Cost Per
Click). The advertiser competes with other advertisers by
'bidding' on the keywords (anywhere from around 5 cents and up), in an
attempt to outbid their competitors. However, Google also factors in the
ranking relevancy of the advertisers destination site, so no one person
or company can just 'buy' the results.
Web
publishers using AdSense create relevant pages, insert a snippet of code
generated by visiting the AdSense members area, and then the Google
engine automatically loads relevant ads, depending on the content of the
web page. Publishers get paid by a combination of a PPC (Pay Per Click)
basis and a 'pay per impression' basis, when visitors click through to an advertiser's website.
Measured in eCPM (earnings Cost Per Thousand
impressions), this combination keeps pages relevant (the key to Google's
success), so if your page isn't relevant enough to make people click on
the ads, you don't get paid as much. If you could make a page that would
get a click through for every impression (i.e. a 100% CTR, Click
Through Rate), you would make a great deal of money with
AdSense.
It
doesn't matter if the visitor buys anything or not, the publisher still
gets paid for the ad impression click-through. There are some very cool tools on the Google
AdSense members site that allow publishers to track different page
results, or even different website domain results.
There are a couple of important points I would like to make:
 | Publishers
can also be Advertisers and use AdWords to drive customers to their
AdSense sites. If the total cost per click for the ads is lower than
the revenues from the site, a profitable campaign is created.
|
 | Publishers
(that are also advertisers) can also use affiliate programs to
generate additional revenue. No product is shipped by the publisher;
revenue is generated simply by referring customers to another site.
|
So if
you already have a website, join the AdSense portal, put up some ads,
and watch the money start to flow with the AdSense reports screen.
You'll see some results the same day you set it up, but don't be
disappointed if it isn't very much - it takes time to get good at it. If
you want to try some advertising, get out your credit card and plan to
spend at least $10 to try it out.
I'll say it again ... unless you're ready to spend big bucks in bidding wars, the first step
in any campaign is to carefully choose niche keywords that bring lots of
searches that nobody else is using. If you haven't yet found your market niche keywords,
you can get a
great piece of software called Keyword Elite

with AdWords marketing. If you're only going to spend money once on
a program to ease the task, this should the one ...
and again ... the best primer on Google AdWords I've seen is by Perry
Marshall. He shows how to use AdWords to great advantage,
well worth the money! The Definitive Guide - 35 examples, 8 industries & fast-start toolkit.
Bonne Chance!
